12/3/2023 0 Comments Dwarf fortress cavern layer![]() Having areas fill with cave moss and mushroom trees is a very good thing, it's a source of pasture area and lumber that you don't need to leave your fort for, but it does look like crap and your fort should be designed around where these resources are. Nowhere does my fort connect with any caverns except where I draw water for my wells and magma for my forges. After all that, I expanded into the soil layers heavily to make lots of space for indoor trees to grow. I dug out the essential areas first, then the workshops, then the stockpiles. Just so you can see an example, here is what is in each z level of my current fort: 144 surfaceġ42 sandy clay (farms, pastures and tree farms)ġ41 conglomerate (kennels, food processing and farmers workshops)ġ40 conglomerate (long hallway from stairs > entrance room > ramps to surface)ġ38 quartzite (clothing industry and soap industry workshop level)ġ27 carpentry / bowyer / siege engines levelġ20 finished goods / furniture stockpilesġ19 crafting/jewels/mechanics/mason workshops and everything else in lower more valuable rock layers. After the staircase is done, I can see what all the layers are and I make each layer something after that, saving the upper soil ones for farms, etc. I usually dig exploratory holes from the surface to locate all the cavern layers first, and just wall them off when I puncture the caverns, this way I can have one continuous staircase the whole way. Then I locate a suitable place for my main staircase in the fort, and I dig a hallway to the spot i want from the entrance room, and then dig a 3x3 up/down staircase from the layer just below the surface all the way down to the magma sea. I make whatever initial workshops i need on the surface near my entrance, usually a mason's workshop, a carpenter's workshop, a craftdwarf's workshop, a mechanic's workshop, and a still. I set all my initial stockpiles here and build a couple beds and tables and chaits to set it as a dormitory and a dining hall/meeting hall. The first thing I do is dig ramps down several levels until I hit a rock layer, then I dig out a little hallway and one 10x10 room there as an entrance room.
